Did you know that for most people, true multitasking isn’t possible? Sure, you might think you’re getting more done when you juggle two tasks at once, but what you’re really doing is decreasing your overall focus on both. You can start one job, get diverted to another, and then another, in an endless loop of not finishing anything. How can you stop it?
One good way to keep yourself on target is to keep two lists. One list is for keeping track of your overall goals, of clients you need to check in with, and things that need reviewing. The other list is for your top three jobs that you absolutely must get done. Glancing at that second list will help keep you on track throughout the day. Keeping your workspace clean and free from clutter will also help you focus on the task at hand. If you have a big task that’s going to take awhile, give yourself a short break every twenty minutes or so. Walk around, grab some coffee, check your email, but be sure to get back to work when five minutes are up. Finally, if you have a thought pop into your head that might distract you from the task at hand, write it down. That way you can come back to it later, or even put it on your list for tomorrow!
